This is Aaron Haroon from CBC news here to report recent news about the 5 major oil spills in recent history in the province of Alberta. The 5 major oil spills in Alberta include Little Buffalo, Red Deer River, Elk Point, Slave Lake, and Red Earth Creek. In the year of 2011, about 4.5 million litres of crude oil leaked near the First Nations community of Little Buffalo. The Little Buffalo spill is known to be the largest spill in Alberta in 35 years. The company's name that was responsible for the Little Buffalo spill was Plains Midstream and were charged 3 counts of violating environmental protection law. The Little Buffalo oil spill was a threat because the oil contaminated more than three hectares of beaver ponds and a forest. On June 2012, a oil spill occurs into a central Alberta river system which then ended up in the Red Deer River which is located near the community of Sundre. The company responsible for the Red Deer River oil spill was again the Plains Midstream and that company again got into big trouble. The Red Deer river oil spill was a major threat because it effected hundreds of people from the community of Sundre, Alta but were not killed. On June of 2012, A pipeline flange basket failed at an En bridge pumping station which spilled about 230,000 litres of crude oil. The spill almost completely covered the site in Elk Point. Elk Point was the third major pipeline oil spill after the Red Deer River and the Little Buffalo spill. The Canadian Natural Resources owned a above ground pipeline but had a failure which caused 70,000 litres of crude oil to spill near Slave Lake. The Slave Lake oil spill occurred on April 2014 but didn't leak near any people, wildlife, or water which could have been a major threat. On November in the year 2014, about 60,000 litres of crude oil spilled in the area of Red Earth Creek because a pipeline experienced a mechanical failure. Low amounts of hydrogen sulphide gas also leaked with the crude oil in the area of Red Earth Creek. The company responsible for the Red Earth Creek oil spill was again the Canadian Natural Resources but the spill did not effect any wildlife. The Red Earth Earth was the fifth major oil spill in Alberta. We now hope that there won't be any other oil spills in the province of Alberta. This is Aaron Haroon from CBC news, giving you the latest news on oil spills in Alberta.

Climate Change has been a big environmental issue in the world and one of the causes of Climate change is greenhouse gases. Climate change is caused by the increase in concentrations of green house gases in the atmosphere. As I looked through the Government of Canada website, I found that in 2017 the oil, gas sector and transportation sector were the largest green house gas emitters in Canada which they accounted 52% of total emissions. There are many factories in Canada which emit a lot of gases. The factories can sometimes be a problem because they create pollution which leads to the issue of Climate Change. Another thing that I found interesting was that in 2017 and in 2005, Alberta was the highest green house gas emitter in Canada but in the year 1990, Ontario was the highest emitter. Canada and Alberta are one of the highest emitting provinces and have the largest production of livestock in Canada is because of the oil and gas sectors. In 2014, the highest green house gas emitting country in the world was China and China was also the highest emitting country in 2005. In 2014, the top 10 emitting regions in the world were China, United States, European Union, India, Russian Federation, Japan, Brazil, Indonesia, Canada and Iran. I found interesting from the website Canada's emissions in 2014 was 745 mega tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent which made 1.6% of global greenhouse gas emissions. I also found interesting that the reason why almost every fast food restaurants have burgers is because the burgers are mainly shipped from Ontario and Alberta. This are my thoughts on Canada and the greenhouse gas effect.
Christmas is the time to enjoy and spend time with your family. People around the world do many different traditions and festivals during Christmas. An example of a unique Christmas tradition in the world can be Pakistan. On Christmas eve, Christians in Pakistan go to churches for the midnight and vigil mass services. People also dance and choirs sing special hymns after the vigil mass services. In Pakistan, People call Christmas ''Bara din'' which means in Urdu or Punjabi big day. On Christmas day, people in Pakistan go to churches again for the celebration of the birth of Jesus. People wear their best colorful clothes. People eat various types of foods at the church but mostly eat chicken biryani (which is colorful, masala rice) and eat a dessert called kheer ( which is a type of rice pudding). People exchange their presents, sing more carols, watch Bollywood movies, and enjoy the special night.
Map Action is an organization that is formed to make maps and data of any natural disaster that has happened and could happen in the future. Map Action also has many members that have volunteered and are still volunteering to help those who have gone through a disaster or who are about to go through a disaster. An example of the members of Map action helping people during a crisis can be that two Map action volunteers are travelling to Djibouti, East Africa to help the 250,000 people that have been affected and hurt by the flood. Another example of the members of Map action helping people during a crisis can be the Hurricane Dorian that stroke the country of Bahamas and the Map action team is supporting the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency to help the people in Bahamas. I think Map Action is a great organization because the organization is very committed to help others who are in need during a natural disaster. Another reason can be that the organization shows how technology and geography is useful for helping people during a crisis. The organization shows the technology and geography by inspiring people through social media or other websites and by making maps of the natural disasters. This are my thoughts on Map action.
Plastic Pollution has become a big problem to society during the years and now.Plastic is made from fossil fuels which are over a century old. Plastic is also a synthetic material formed by long chains of carbon and hydrogen called polymers.Plastic is mostly a main problem to the water source. About 8 million tons of plastic go in oceans from coastal nations every year. Because of the Plastic going into oceans every year, species on land are dying and most species in the ocean are dying. Plastic has been effecting the earth in many different ways such as agriculture, urban waste, and industrial. A example of plastic effecting the oceans and the earth is a big whale shark is swimming beside a plastic bag in Yemen. Even though whale sharks are one of the biggest creatures in the sea, they are still threatened by small pieces of plastic. Another example of plastic effecting the oceans and the earth is that in Queensland, Australia, a bower bird's nest is cover with glass and plastics which is really dangerous and harmful.
Climate Change is an event that is caused by changes in the amount of energy that is kept in the earths atmosphere. Some causes of Climate Change can be Natural processes such as changes in the suns intensity and volcanic eruptions. Another cause of Climate Change can be Human activities such as creating greenhouse emissions and cutting down trees in forests. Climate change can be a threat to humanity because of the earthquakes, rising sea levels, tsunamis, and others. The current issue that is happening in this earth because of climate change are the changes in precipitations patterns in the US. The average US precipitation has been growing since the year 1900 and some places have a greater growth than the national precipitation. Another current issue happening are droughts and heatwaves happening in the Southwest of America which are projected to get more intense. But the issue I will be talking about is the thickest mountain glacier is melting in Alaska because of climate change. My choice is the top priority right now is because if that mountain glacier will melt, then the sea level will rise at a good amount and can cause a massive flood to happen or a mountain tsunami. This can cause habitat destruction and can become a threat to humanity, There may be no more water in the area of Alaska for people drink. When I become a adult, the way I can contribute for this solution is to gather up people from around the world who are making the fossil fuels and are working for the greenhouse gas emissions to reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2). This can be a way to prevent the thickest glacier in Alaska and also prevent climate change at the same time.
Public Transit is the type of transportation that can help a lot of people get to some far places and nearby places. There are some good things about public transit and there are some bad things about public transit. The good things about public transit are that it helps decrease road congestion, pollution, oil consumption and that's why some streets don't have a lot of traffic jams and accidents and can benefit both drivers and non-drivers. Public Transits has a lot of room for people than cars and trucks so that can be useful for drivers to not waste their gas. Public Transit can also be useful because for example if you are far from school , so then you can take the public transit. Another way Public Transit can be useful is for example if you are paying a lot for your car bills so you could go on a Public Transit and pay less for car bills. Some of the disadvantages about public transit is that for example lets say if you have a job and you need to get there on time and you go on a Public Transit, most likely there may be alot of people in the bus so you may be late or not go to work because all of the cluster and the speed limits. Another disdvantage about a Public Transit is when you are at a bus stop and sometimes you have to wait for a long time for the bus to come because of maybe the weather or something else. Overall i would rather be active or go in a car rather than going in a Public Transit because sometimes you may run into people that are bad in the bus but if i had no other choice of transportation then i would prefer Public Transit because of the good benefits it can have. These are my thoughts on Public Transit.
People use cars to get from point a to b in a city and people say that driving is better than walking but I really think that walking is better and here are some reasons why. The first reason why walking is better because of the great health you could earn from it such as it could gain your cardiovascular fitness, strengthen your bones, decrease your fatness and much more but when your in a car, your just sitting and driving and getting no health. Second reason is for example from your home to get to your grandmas house it takes a 30 minutes walk in the city but there's a lot of traffic so I would go on a walk for 30 minutes rather than going on a car and being stuck traffic for 45 or 60 minutes, The third reason why is for example from your home to get to your school is a 5 minute walk so I would walk for 5 minutes rather than wasting my gas and go in a car for just 5 minutes. A walk may not be good for long distance but for near areas you could walk and enjoy the breeze of mother nature.
